Healthcare

Red Cell Partners’ Healthcare Practice builds AI-based technology and tech-enabled service companies to flatten the U.S. healthcare cost curve while improving access and quality.

Innovating for Healthcare

Advances in biological sciences, data analytics, and AI are rapidly transforming the healthcare landscape, accelerating new innovations for life-changing treatments, and improving patients’ control over their personal records and care experiences.

Innovating for Healthcare

The U.S. healthcare system is facing unprecedented pressure, driven by critical challenges that threaten the delivery of timely, affordable, and high-quality care. At the core of these challenges lies the escalating unit cost of healthcare and a capacity crisis stretching the system toward its breaking point.

The aging population – a “silver tsunami” – is increasing demand to an unserviceable level. Some 11,000 seniors age into Medicare each day and by 2050, over 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 or older. Complicating matters further, an overwhelming majority of these seniors are already living with chronic health conditions, many of them expensive to treat. The National Council on Aging reports that about 95% of adults aged 60 and older have at least one condition, while almost 80% have two or more. At the same time, the United States is facing a national shortage of healthcare workers that’s expected to climb to 100,000 by 2028. Excessive administrative burdens and staffing shortages contribute to 93% of physicians feeling burned out on a regular basis, creating significant barriers to delivering timely care and maintaining high-quality services for patients. Even as advances in biotech have been exceeding expectations for cures and relief of suffering, these innovations are also adding to healthcare delivery challenges. Each new diagnostic test and therapeutic adds to the tasks and cognitive load of short-staffed clinicians. And, as top clinicians focus on the latest treatments, fewer and fewer are focused on the necessary basics of prevention, chronic illness, and care coordination.

Simultaneously, the affordability chasm is widening.Despite high healthcare spending, the U.S. continues to lag behind other high-income countries in key health outcomes, claiming the lowest life expectancy and highest rate of chronic diseases. Rising insurance costs and deductibles continue to increase employees’ out-of-pocket expenses, requiring many to pay more upfront for healthcare services. These financial pressures are driving significant changes in consumer behavior, with millions delaying or forgoing care due to cost, as more individuals struggle with pervasive medical debt.

Despite these challenges, we find ourselves at a remarkable inflection point. Advances in biological sciences, data analytics, and AI are rapidly transforming the healthcare landscape, accelerating new innovations for life-changing treatments, and improving patients’ control over their personal records and care experiences. Generative AI has transitioned from being a “nice-to-have” tool to a critical component for many healthcare use cases, offering the potential to revolutionize and synthesize rapidly scaling medical information, supporting clinicians in decision-making, and improving care quality. While technology has historically contributed to increased complexity in healthcare, these latest advancements – if strategically deployed – offer the opportunity to deliver much needed relief to overburdened providers experiencing higher demand for their services. Patients, in turn, will benefit from better healthcare that is more efficient, accessible, and affordable.

Where We Build: Our Strike Zones

We are dedicated to developing companies that leverage emerging technologies to help reshape our healthcare system, with a focus on five critical areas.

Red Cell’s team brings deep expertise and a proven track record of driving positive change in the healthcare landscape. We are dedicated to developing companies that leverage emerging technologies to help reshape our healthcare system, with a focus on five critical areas:

Clinical-Specific Verticals

Enhancing care in specialist fields through tailored technologies, such as early detection, chronic illness care, and digital health therapeutics for mental health. These innovations enable more precise diagnoses and personalized treatment plans, improving both short-term and long-term patient outcomes.

Clinical Cross-Cutting

Building technologies applicable across all specialties, such as clinical decision support and care navigation. These solutions facilitate easier access to care, streamline communication, and empower patients to actively manage their health, ultimately leading to better care coordination and reduced healthcare fragmentation.

Administrative

Facilitating the automation and digitization of administrative functions to reduce manual labor and eliminate unnecessary steps in patient care pathways. Early disruptive advancements include ambient documentation, AI-based finance and procurement software, and automated RCM and prior authorization. These innovations alleviate administrative burdens, freeing up time for both physicians and providers to prioritize patient care.

Metrics and Analytics

Advancing data analytics tools that allow providers to track metrics such as clinical outcomes for procedures, process metrics for chronic illness, and total cost of care. Analysis of such metrics can identify areas for improvement and implement evidence-based practices that enhance patient outcomes.

Payment Innovation

Developing new models or processes that incentivize improving health outcomes and preventative care over volume of services. Aligning reimbursement with long-term patient health helps incentivize behaviors and practices to promote better health outcomes and prevention.

Our Core Principles

To achieve meaningful transformation, we believe technology must reduce transaction costs, improve efficiency, and support the workforce, all while addressing the unique challenges of delivering care.

Red Cell aims to build healthcare companies that can lower unit costs to improve access and outcomes. To achieve meaningful transformation, we believe technology must reduce transaction costs, improve efficiency, and support the workforce, all while addressing the unique challenges of delivering care. We understand that healthcare customers don’t just buy technology; they invest in outcomes. Tech-enabled solutions must deliver clear, measurable benefits for both patients and providers to succeed. Thus, each company we pursue must align with our core principles:

Value is Quantifiable and Attributable

We focus on driving operational efficiencies and reducing costs across the healthcare spectrum, delivering measurable value to both healthcare customers and their patients. Solutions must provide concrete, attributable ROI, with technology creating a durable advantage for one or more key metric: Average Revenue per User (ARPU), Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), Operating Expense (OPEX), and/or Total Cost of Care (TCOC).

Activation Drives Success

We believe activation is a critical feature of every successful product. When patients are empowered with knowledge and possess a willingness to actively engage in their own care, outcomes significantly improve, driving down healthcare costs.

Innovation Must Simplify the Patient Experience

We pursue innovation that simplifies patient experiences and streamlines pathways to create seamless interactions and the efficient delivery of care.

Distribution is Key to Achieving Scale

Effective distribution channels are essential for scaling solutions. We believe partner alignment is critical to achieving market success. The market must ensure stakeholders are aligned, incentives are synchronized, and scalable channels can be leveraged to structure partnerships for shared value.
